Day 1: Piraeus

The Celestyal Crystal departs from Piraeus port at 15.00.

Day 2: Istanbul

The ship arrives at Istanbul port at 15.00. The ship overnights in Istanbul

Split between two continents, Europe and Asia, Istanbul is truly unique. It boasts lavish Byzantine architecture and imperial mosques with sky-high minarets that make up the city’s skyline; your first sight from the Bosphorus Strait on your Istanbul cruise. There’s an endless list of must-see sights to tick off, all conveniently packed into the Sultanahmet district.

The grand Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Blue Mosque are among the most photographed landmarks in Istanbul, and the perfect places to delve into the city’s vivid history. As the end point of the Silk Road, lots of cultures have made their mark on the city’s tapestry. The modern-day Sultan Ahmet Square is the location of the old Hippodrome of Constantinople – an ancient meeting ground for chariot racing – the neoclassical St George’s Cathedral, subterranean Basilica Cistern and Chora Church all make up the incredible variety of sights in Istanbul.

Best of all are the many tea gardens and coffeehouses where you can rub shoulders with the locals as you unwind between sightseeing sprees. Then there’s the Grand Bazaar, a sprawling labyrinth of lanes filled with 4,000 shops and counting. Wander off the main thoroughfares and you might just catch a glimpse of talented artisans at work.

Day 3: Istanbul

Day at your leisure in Istanbul. The ship departs at 18.00

Day 4: Kavala

The ship arrives at Kavala port at 11.00 and departs at 20.00

Trickling down the slopes of Mt Symvolo in northern Greece, Kavala opens its arms as you approach from the sea. Built like an amphitheater hugging the hills and embracing the seafront, you’ll want to get straight into exploring this absorbing city. Modern neoclassical mansions, Byzantine monuments and Islamic architecture evoke its long and varied history.

Taking your first steps along its palm-lined port, the smell of charcoal-grilled seafood and sight of fishing boats unloading their haul will tickle your senses to life. Converted tobacco warehouses also line the front with bars, restaurants and picturesque spots to enjoy typical Kavala weather and long, lingering sunsets.

Home to a whole host of religious sites that you’ll find dotted around the city, the old town is filled with multihued buildings, a castle with commanding views over the horizon and an Acropolis built on the ruins of the old Byzantine castle. Alternatively, find time for yourself in one of the perfect, tranquil beaches surrounding the city.

Day 5: Thessaloniki

The ship arrives at Thessaloniki port at 08.00 and departs at 19.00

The thick Byzantine walls guarding Thessaloniki give way to an inviting mix of architectural landscapes with winding cobbled streets. Approaching the port, you will be captivated by a city that radiates culture and sophistication bathed in golden Greek sunshine. Palm-lined avenues house glamorous shops and gourmet restaurants, and historic cobblestone streets present traditional tavernas and ouzeria’s to satisfy everyone’s taste buds. Beautiful churches appear from every corner, seasonal markets sell colorful local produce and shaded spots on Aristotelous Square are where you can sit back with a homemade ice cream and watch the world go by.

Day 6: Volos

The ship arrives at Volos port at 08.00 and departs at 18.30

Tucked in below Mt Pelion – land of the mythical centaurs – Volos embraces the Pagasetic Gulf to one side and the dramatic, mountainous Pelion Peninsula to the other. Step off your Volos cruise, and you’re greeted by a thriving university city whose energetic pace will whisk you up into its whirlwind of activity, both at the port and in the tsipouradika - traditional tavernas - and set you on course to uncover some real architectural gems, both ancient and neoclassical.

Wander around and you’ll find grand urban mansions sitting beside nods to the city’s long-lasting industrial heritage. And following the hum of activity will see you in Volos’ favorite local hangout, Kontaratou, which is brimming with countless cafes and eateries of all kind.

Do as the locals do and stroll along the seafront Argonauts Avenue to take you to some of the best tsipouradika tavernas – a Volos institution. These relaxed eateries serve up some of the city’s most delicious food accompanied by a tsipouro, or pomace brandy. There may well be impromptu singing and table sharing, but with just under 600 tsipouradika in Volos, they’re a gastronomic destination in their own right. Heading out of the city and into foothills of Mt Pelion, there is a potpourri of traditional villages sprinkled down forested hillsides, where you can hike in the summer or even ski in the winter when the hills are veiled in snow.

Day 7: Santorini

The ship arrives at Santorini port at 09.00 and departs at 20.00

The cliffs of Santorini island shine with the bright white of the houses that dominate the Mediterranean from the top of their summit.
Upon arrival at the port of Santorini, you will be enchanted by the charm of the lagoon that surrounds this beautiful volcanic island. The harmony between the crystal blue water and the white villages located at the top of the cliffs is truly exceptional. Make the most of your trip to Santorini by visiting the lava beaches. Their black colour makes them truly spectacular. Archaeology lovers should not miss the chance to visit Akotiri. Excavations have unearthed Minoan ruins and a city that dates back to the Cycladic civilisation.

Not to be missed: The magical village of Oia, Excursions to the slopes of the volcano of Santorini, The ruins of Akrotiri

Day 8: Piraeus
